Jack of Fables Issue #4 Pencils&Breakdowns

Is this getting too predictable? I hope that this is still interesting to you; seeing these scribbles even though you hold the glorious finished product in your hands. By now, I'm feeling fairly comfortable (my Grandmother used to pronounce that as "comfort-tahble") in having Bill and Matts' ideas spill onto the very, very blank page in front of me. Trust me, without the breakdown process I would have folded months ago. Plus, Shelly Bonds' preference for straightforward panel layout is something that I appreciate as it allows me to concentrate on what's INSIDE the panels rather than spending bandwidth on clever panel layout (I started a gaming company, I can legitimately use "bandwidth").
Anyway, I hope that you enjoy this entry. I'm fairly sure(Bill) that there aren't any spoilers lurking in the margins. The breakdown for Page 6 is duped for some reason without and significant changes (due to batching?)
Note the change that occurred on Page 18. Just because you hand an issue in doesn't mean you're done with it. I expect calls from Shelly with changes to panels in the hours prior to printing. I don't mind, truly.
Enjoy!

Happily I got to exploit the views of the Mr. T. in these panels. The "Sturginghams" requested the racing number but I just HAD to add the mudflaps (almost went with Yosemite Sam saying "Back Off!")

Yes, that IS Bruce Lees' fighting stance, thank you.

JoF 4 Breakdowns follow below...
I really work to squeeze the art in around the dialog; it's very important that the balloons track easily.

Definitely still interesting, fascinating actually. Even when I'm lucky enough to see originals, it's rare to be able to see the full story together with the breakdowns, and then be able see how it changes with different steps. I really do appreciate you taking the time to put them up, but please don't feel obligated to (Although we will happily heap oodles of thanks upon you when you do).

I love the mudflaps on the Tortoise, too.
On page 16 of the pencils, aside from Billy Barty as a munchkin (terrific portrait, by the way) and the little hairy egg to the left of him. Is that a brain with legs or a cloud with legs in the upper right margin?

Also what does "Flop Everything" mean under Page 19 of the breakdowns?

And it would have been a shame for the chainlinks to have hidden all that lovely detail.

Thanks again for taking the time to post these.

As I said at the Forums, I'll say it again- I really like the last page. Jack looks badass (even if he's about to get whupped).

Keep posting these things...they make me happy. :)

Flop Everything is a note to myself to reverse the composition of the page horizontally in order to have the action of the Bagman dashing not to run off the OUTSIDE margin of the page.
The little carrots ( >) that I place by the page numbers is to remind which margin of the page is the outside edge.
Glad that you agree about the chainlink, Cinders!
Happy to make you happy Kat!

I would have to say the art in this issue is some of the best so far. It was great to see as my comic store has not yet got their shipment of comics (lost by UPS) in yet. So here I am almost a week later and I have no idea what is going on......AAARRRGGGHHHH. It was great to see the art even though it is only half the story and I still can't wait to read the book. I will actually be picking it up today.

The escape in progress is great. The one page that is all different characters making their break is going to open up the speculation for weeks on who is all on that page.

Thanks again for posting these Tony. Especially this week, as it is my only access to the book so far

Brilliant. Comparing thumbnails to finished pages is my new porn. How about posting snippets from the script too? Pretty please

OK, since you asked so nicely. Nicely for a deranged bivalve, at least. I'll see what I can do...just put the knife down...you could shell somebody...
