Jack of Fables Issue #3 Pencils

Hey, everybody. Just got back from seeing "FLYBOYS". If you've followed my blog, then you know that there was NO WAY that I could not see this film. The story was not that great, and the action didn't seem to truly capture the tactics used during the period. There were a coupled of shots that could have been lifted directly from a past blog entry here. This made me happy. Yes there's TOO many red Fokker Tri-planes (DR 1). A later modelm of the SPAD is shown too early in the film. The Neuports flown by the hero squadron has some, if not all, of the fighters equipped with a wing-mounted Lewis to fire above the propellar arc AND a Vickers air-cooled mounted in front of the pilot. That can't be right.
Sigh.
Well, it was a nice try...

Here's some pencils.

This page changed a bit. That's right! The last two panels were FLOPPED!
Congrats!

Howdy, it's me again. Since I discovered your blog, you can expect more stupid comments from me. But hey, I view it as my part as a fan to annoy you.

Anyhow, I wanted to say I really like your pencil drawings. I'm amused by the things that were covered by text/color in the comic- such as Jack's apparently lack of junk in the last panel (I'm just ripping on you, no worries).

I did want to say, seriously, that I was surprised to see that Jack's expression in the last panel of page 9 was different than it was in the printed comic. While I like the final expression he was published with (the smirk leaves the reader with a more smarmy and playful impression of Jack), I like how the original looks too...like he's a dog with his tail tucked between his legs and an, "Aw, man. I thought I had more charm than that" expression.

In any case, good work and I look forward to seeing more of your work in #4. :P

Awesome pencils as usual, Tony. Your posting these is a major highlight.

Out of curiousity, why did you indicate speech balloons on page 14 panel 5 (Sam sending the hare and tortoise for help)?

Tony,
Sorry Flyboys was a bit of a letdown. Wow, you're a regular fountain of information on antique aircraft and their weaponry. I'd be happy to know half of what you've forgotten on the subject. I would also loved to have been a fly on the wall for meeting it where it was proposed that the machine guns fire through the spinning propellers. That concept must have gone over SO well at first...

Hey all.
Cinders, the balloon indications happen from time to time. The whole breakdown process that happens at the initial script reading is where I establish balloon placement; the editor reviews my "breaks" to check balloon/caption placement and my storytelling.
Sometimes, while actually drawing the page, I'll double check that placement...Especially if I'm considering changing something about the panel...Which is what I may have be thinking about on Page 14 Panel 5.

I'll post my breaks for this issue, now that you mention it. WHEEE!!!

Wow, I go away for a couple days and I come back to more updates on the blog then I can keep up with.

I know it gets redundant but please keep posting the pencils. I haven't spoken to a single Fables fan yet that doesn't love coming and checking them out.

That said, is it just me or is the page looking down into the fairy cage one of the coolest perspectives and angles ever. I am sure you had a ball drawing all the cage lines but your efforts paid off. It looks amazing.

Secondly, I am scared by the knowledge that ol' Jack is well endowed as a Ken Doll. There is just something wrong about not having the word balloon there.

Lastly, Jack impaled on a fence. Does it get any better then that. Another great chapter with some more great art. Keep up the great work :)

Akey,
1) Dude, Love the Birds on page 2... I've been werkin' no mine, for You Know What... HAHA!!! I will be GREAT!!!

2) If the Powers that be are smart, they'll exploit the Livin' Shit out of Your "Humpty Dumpty"... The whole Kit-and_Kaboodle", the figure/diorama, the alarm clock (It starts with the Whistlin' of something fallin', then wakes a person up with the CRASH!!! of Humpty hittin' the, followed by H's Screams of Agonizin' Pain, then pullin' back with the whispered comments of passerbys sayin' what a Gruesome Scene it is)... But, that's only if they're "Smart"... If this comes out, I want my 40%... Hear that Mr./Ms./Mrs. Bigtime Decision Makin' Person... 40%!!!

3) Still OverWhelmed by Your ability to capture such Natural Body Language for each character (Even the BackGround People, which so MANY other artists just forget about)... Particularly in Pages 6 and 7 with the Flippin' of the Bird and PigTail Girl's PigTails Flarin' Out and Expression...

4) Who doesn't LOVE an impaled Hero??? Nuff' Said...

5)CrotchLess Jack is scary... My genitals cried for an hour...

Later,

Tony
